In a series of experiments, we investigate whether using a foreign language affects dishonest behavior, and the mechanisms behind it. Subjects learn about their performance relative to another participant and have the opportunity to lie about the performance difference to increase their own payoff at a cost to the other. Our experimental manipulation is the language of instructions and the decision environment. We find that native Chinese speakers who speak English as a foreign language lie significantly more in their native language. We show that social norms cannot explain this effect, and in fact are at odds with subjects’ behavior. Using native German speakers who speak English as a foreign language, we test the proposed cultural accommodation mechanism, and find support for it.
