内容提要:

Research on IT ambidexterity is burgeoning, yet our understanding of the antecedents and consequences of IT ambidexterity remains underdeveloped. We advance the growing body of the literature by examining how systems of knowing (social and structural) influence the two dimensions of IT ambidexterity (i.e., IT exploitation and IT exploration) and how environmental dynamism moderates the relationship between IT ambidexterity and organizational agility. By using a matched-paired filed survey of business and IT executives, we found that the structural systems of knowing positively influences IT exploitation but has no significant effect on IT exploration. Interestingly, social systems of knowing appear to be an important antecedent of both IT exploration and IT exploitation. We also find the moderating role of environmental dynamism on the relationship between two dimensions of IT ambidexterity and organization agility. IT exploitation increases agility in stable environments but has no effect on agility in dynamic environments. IT exploration has a positive effect on agility in both stable and dynamic environments and the effect in dynamic environments is stronger. We contribute to the IT ambidexterity research by offering a better understanding of how firms coordinate the development of IT exploration and IT exploitation and how IT exploration and IT exploitation enhance organizational agility in different level of environmental dynamism.
